Decatur, named for naval hero Stephen Decatur, was founded in 1823 and is located just six miles east of downtown Atlanta. Decatur is the county seat for DeKalb County. The downtown Decatur Square (the area of shops and restaurants around the old Courthouse) was built where two Native American trails once crossed. Today Decatur is a town of approximately 18,000. Some describe Decatur as a cross between Mayberry and Berkeley because of its largely liberal population and small town feel. Downtown Decatur has many restaurants ranging from casual to upscale, as well as art galleries and great shopping.
City Schools of Decatur are highly recognized and draw many families to the area. Decatur is also in close proximity to many universities and colleges including Emory University, Agnes Scott College, Devry University, and Columbia Theological Seminary.
